It's all Burda's fault

Burda, BWOF, BurdaStyle - whatever we are calling it these days just isn't grabbing my interest lately. Less than a year ago I could barely wait to get the next magazine and even if I didn't get around to making all the things I liked at least they were there waiting for me. Now it just seems a lot less exciting than it used to be, there are still good basics, but I've got those already, I want funky details that I am not clever enough to come up with myself.

For me this void has been filled by Vogue patterns who have been coming up with some interesting designer patterns which have already been discussed on blogs galore. My latest order just arrived today, here's what I got;

This one is a bit wacky, but intrigues me.

I got this for the blouse details.

I love the sleeve detail on this one.

So many great details on this dress.

Jersey crossover dress from Donna Karan, will have to look out for suitable fabric.

I need another dress pattern like a hole in the head but am powerless to resist.

  1. I agree, Vogue has been much more interesting lately. I love a lot of the older Burda mag patterns but the lastest batches are pretty boring and shapeless.
I bought a few of the Vogues before the new releases but I see they have a sale yet again....can I resist more?
Oh, and good luck with the dress in the earlier post - sounds like it will be great in that colour.

  2. Nice! Vogue. I ordered direct from McCall's when they run a sale and it comes out less for me than when I bought directly from a mortar-and-brick store in Asia or here in Europe. But hey, for funky details Knip Mode is well-known for the funk. It's sold all over Brussels, so pop me an email if an issue catches your eye. There are plenty of cute sewing bits sold in HK, we could do a trade or something :)

  3. Love your pattern choices. You're right that Vogue have come out with some great patterns this season. Many of them are a bit advanced for my current sewing abilities (e.g.the red one with the sleeve detail, which I love) but maybe some time in the future I'll be up to it! I know you will make wonderful dresses from your selection.

  4. I must have hit a dry spell. Even the spring vogue patterns do nothing for me. I do like the black skirt in figure 2, but I need another skirt like a hole in the head......

  5. I agree with you about Burda. I am seriously considering dropping my subscription. The past three issues have just not been my favorites. I love Vogue's new pattern, though.

  6. There has been nothing to excite me in Burda for six months! Maybe a few things I might possibly make, but nothing really good. Boo.

    You got some great patterns!

  7. You got a great selection of patterns there! I have big plans myself for the knit dress on the bottom and that Rachel Comey silk number - they both are rocking my world right now. :)

  9. I loved the Vogues this year and am bored with Burda as well. I tried Burda last year for 3 months but wasnt thrilled. I liked the first Vogue pattern listed but wasnt sure if it would work with my body type. Can wait to see it made up. I think it would look great on you!!!

  10. Ditto on everyone's comments about boredom with Burda. Bring back the interesting and complex details!!! I'm paid up through August though, so it's not like I can drop the subscription. Great Vogue choices!

  11. I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one who feels bored with Burda. I renewed my subscription for just six months. If it keeps being the same-old, same-old, I'm saying buh-bye.

  13. I am really loving Vogue lately, too. I need to FIND an event to go to so I have an excuse to make that red dress!!

  14. Yep, I renewed Burda magazine last year after a four year hiatus only to discover that it just isn't as fabulous as it once was.

I like all those Vogue you posted also.

  15. I agree with you. Burda was a little disappointing in the last few months. On the other hand, i looove the new vogue patterns!

  16. Yeah I know what you mean about Burda. I used to have at least 2-3 "must-sew"s and a handful more patterns I really liked from each issue, but recently, there's been maybe one "must-sew" from the last four issues combined.

But instead of tuning to Vogue (I seriously hate tracing their awful room-sized tissue, they're super expensive, and don't fit me terribly well), I'm instead sewing loads more KnipMode and Patrones and finding other random pattern magazines to sew from. So I"ve got no lack of inspiring things to sew, it's just that those things are less frequently coming from Burda.

I do love that DKNY knit dress, though. yowza.

  17. I agree with you about Vogue. I was at the fabric store recently and flipped through the Vogue catalog --- it has been a while since I haven't had luck with the fit of these patterns. I was pleasantly surprised with the cool details on many of the designs!

  18. I really like the first grey number! It is a bit weird how it is styled on the pattern pic, but made up, I think it would look amazing.
